Attorney Biography

Dan Balmat’s practice focuses on insurance coverage litigation, primarily involving commercial general liability and pollution liability policies. Dan joined the firm in 2019 after a five-year stint as a Vice President and Claim Advocate in the San Francisco office of Marsh & McLennan where he provided coverage analysis and claims advocacy support for commercial clients with complex or high dollar claims, over a wide range of industries, jurisdictions, and lines of coverage, including general commercial liability, environmental liability, professional liability, and auto liability, with particular emphasis on the healthcare, construction, and technology sectors. Dan also advised clients on risk management strategies, claim handling practices, employee training, and insurance program structures.

For nearly a decade prior, Dan was a commercial litigation attorney in the San Francisco offices of several national and international law firms, where his practice involved a wide range of complex commercial litigation matters, with an emphasis on insurance-related issues, including bad faith litigation.

Dan has represented insurers and insureds, brokers and agents, in a wide range of cases involving multiple coverage types, including general liability, pollution liability, property, professional responsibility, and workers compensation. Dan has significant trial and appellate experience, and has successfully argued cases in both state and federal courts, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal.

Dan graduated cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 2003, where he represented the school in several regional moot court competitions and received the Dean’s Award for Constitutional Law. Dan received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, in Political Science.
